HEC Paris (École des hautes études commerciales de Paris) is a truly multicultural institute where the students find a chance grow as individuals and as a community by interacting with people of so many different nationalities, ideas, and cultures. Qualification Requirments

  • For international students, an undergraduate degree from an accredited University is required to be eligible for the MBA program. This requirement can be waived in certain special cases when a candidate has proof that they have completed their higher secondary education and in addition have worked a minimum of 5 years in a professional environment, and must have worked at a managerial position for at least 3 years. Candidates who do not hold an undergraduate degree but instead have represented their country at the national level as an athlete are also eligible and considered for the MBA program. 
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) test results which should not be more than five years old at the time of application. Section wise preferred score bracket for both the tests are given below. HEC accepts only the official test scores.  
  • Proof of English proficiency is required by non-native English speakers. Those candidates who live in a non-native English speaking country but secured their degree from a university where the medium of instruction was entirely in English do not have to take the English proficiency tests, their official university degree which specifies that the sole medium of instruction was English will be sufficient. For the rest of the candidates, HEC will accept the test scores of the following exams- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), Pearson Test of English (PTE),  Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), and Cambridge English Exams. The marks of these tests will be valid for two years only, and the minimum requirement for each of these tests is given below. 
  • HEC admits candidates who have a minimum of 2 years of professional work experience. HEC clearly wants to see the progression of a candidate in their workplace, and the kind of work undertaken by a candidate and their official designation. HEC wants to see how a candidate works under pressure and how well they can manage and multitask. Ambition and personal direction are the desired qualities expected from all the MBA applicants. Candidates who have held some kind of a leadership role in their work would also be looked upon favourably, as HEC wants candidates to cite examples of the same in their application. On average the admitted candidates have worked around minimum of 2 to around 10 years.  

Cost of Attendance

HEC has a dedicated housing facility by the name of Expansiel available to the students. The accommodation will be allocated to the students on the basis of first-come-first-serve, i.e. who confirm their place into the MBA batch first. There are 177 Individual rooms available on the campus whose price per month is € 649.35 and are 19m² in size. There are 24 one bedroom apartments available for those students who will be accompanied by their spouses or dependents. The cost for the one bedroom apartment is € 898.95 per month and the size will be around 35-38 m². HEC will also provide assistance those students who wish to live off campus.

Application Process

Transcripts – Information regarding all the degrees, undergraduate and postgraduate (if any), pursued by a candidate post their high school education are to be submitted by the candidate. If the transcripts are not in English, an official English translation of the same should be uploaded with the original official transcript. HEC accepts the official academic transcripts only in the online application. 

GMAT/GRE – Students have to submit their official test scores in the online application. Typically HEC expects the applicants to score a balanced score in the test firmly in the above average category. HEC expects the students to score above 60% in the verbal and quantitative section of the GMAT, while the minimum score received by the students in the GRE should be at least or above the 65th percentile in the verbal and quantitative section.

English Proficiency Tests– The minimum score requirement for the English proficiency tests are as follows:-

  • TOEFL: minimum 100 in the internet-based; 600 in the paper-based
  • TOEIC: minimum 340 in Speaking and Writing sections, minimum 850 in the Listening and Reading sections
  • IELTS: minimum overall score of 7.0, with a minimum score of 6.5 in each section of the test
  • Cambridge English exams : minimum overall score of 185, with a minimum score of 176 in each section of the test
  • PTE: minimum score of 72

Resume – A current business resume is to be uploaded in the application form. 

Letters of Reference – Two letters of recommendation are to be uploaded in the online application form. The details regarding the questions asked by HEC will be made available in the online application itself. Candidates should choose someone who has worked with them in a professional capacity, such as a manager or section head for the reference. 

Essay – The following essay questions should clearly communicate to the admissions board the candidates future goals, and how HEC will be able to help the applicant achieve those goals. The motivation and objective of the applicant should be expressed to the best of the candidates ability keeping in mind that framing a precise and focused answer which clearly outlines the applicants long term and short term goals post the MBA will prove beneficial. Prepare a convincing answer as to how HEC will help the candidate achieve said targets. 

While this will deal with the first question, the rest of the questions are not limited to the professional agendas, therefore students can branch out and impress the Admissions Board with their individuality. 

  1. Why are you applying to the HEC MBA Program now? What is the professional objective that will guide your career choice after your MBA, and how will the HEC MBA contribute to the achievement of this objective? (up to 500 words)
  2. What do you consider your most significant life achievement? (up to 250 words)
  3. Leadership and ethics are inevitably intertwined in the business world. Describe a situation in which you have dealt with these issues and how they have influenced you. (up to 250 words)
  4. Imagine a life entirely different from the one you now lead, what would it be? (up to 250 words)
  5. Please choose from one of the following essays, (up to 250 words)
  • What monument or site would you advise a first-time visitor to your country or city to discover, and why?
  • Certain books, movies or plays have had an international success that you believe to be undeserved. Choose an example and analyse it.
  • What figure do you most admire and why? You may choose from any field (arts, literature, politics, business, etc)

Application Fee – A non-refundable application fee of €200 is to be paid online once the online application is complete and submitted. 

Interview – The candidates who pass the Pre-Selection Jury will be invited for the interview rounds. There will be two interviews, conducted by the HEC MBA alumni.  All the interviews will be conducted in English only. Both the interviews hold equal weightage in the final selection process and will be used to analyse the candidates communication skills, leadership potential, as well as how well a candidate is able to contribute to the discussions. The interview itself involves a 10-minute oral presentation (the topic is decided by the candidate according to their preference) followed by an in depth discussion of the candidates application.

Application Deadlines  

Technically, the MBA applications are open year long, and the Admissions Board takes five weeks to review an application. However for each month, there are some specific dates, and if a students application is complete by this time, they will be able to submit their application in that month. Additionally on the HEC website it is mentioned that a student “cannot apply for the same class more than once; that is to say, a student may apply for either the September intake or the January intake of the following year, but not both. A student may only apply to HEC Paris MBA twice, regardless of intake.”

All the applicants are recommended, especially the international students who will have to apply for visa and student accomodation, to send in their application in the earlier deadlines, i.e. for example if a student want to apply for the January 2020 batch, they should ideally apply in the earlier months and not wait till the October or November deadlines. 

Visa 

Candidates who are the citizens of and belong to either the European Union/European Economic Area or Switzerland do not require a visa to enter and study in the French higher education institutions. Non-EU members on the other hand will be issued one of the three types of Student Visa by France, Visa de court séjour pour etudes (short-stay student visa) issued to those who study in France for three-months or less, Visa de long séjour temporaire pour etudes (temporary long-stay visa) issued to those students who will be in the country, studying for three to six months, and Visa de long séjour etudes (long stay visa) issued to those who are enrolled in a program whose study term is longer than six months and the visa will be equivalent to a residence permit (VLS-TS).

Accepted applicants will have to apply for the long stay visa and the following documents would be required for completion of the same 

  • Long stay application form 
  • Two passport size photographs 
  • Photocopy of the Passport/ an identity card is sufficient for citizen belonging to European Union
  • Print out of Campus France ID number
  • Letter of registration or the confirmation letter from HEC
  • A Cover letter explaining the study project as well as the students resume
  • Proof of funds and financial ability, which will include the tuition fee and a minimum balance of 615 per month in the students account for the entirety of the academic term^ 
  • Proof of medical insurance whose coverage is valid in France
  • Copy of a one-way ticket to France 
  • OFII form (Office Francais de Immigration et de Integration)
  • A copy of the CV
  • Photocopy of the students degree(s), academic diplomas, and certificates

^ as stated on the website of the French embassy “Students who do not receive scholarships or bursaries from the French Government, foreign governments, international bodies and do not benefit from EU programmes must prove that they have sufficient means (i.e. €615 per month), equivalent to 100% of the basic monthly maintenance allocation given to foreign students on scholarships by the French Government (references: Article 36 of Decree No. 2011-1049 of 6 September 2011 amending Article 14 of Decree No.99-352 of 5 May 1999).

The entire application process is two fold, students first have to apply at Campus France and then at the French Embassy, and the necessary documents for both will be different, therefore candidates should make sure that all of the documents mentioned are ready with them. The first step will be to register with Campus France and complete all the formalities there by filling in all the academic details and credentials. Once that is done, the application will be reviewed and the candidate will be assigned a Campus France office in their home country. Students then have to arrange and appear for an interview appointment with the Campus advisor. After completion of the interview, the candidate will be given an interview completion certificate. Thereafter students have to make an appointment at the French Embassy or Consulate in their home country.

Placement 

The Career Center at HEC is a dedicated body which will help the students achieve their goals post the MBA by providing their help through professional clubs, career workshops, one-on-one career coaching, campus conferences, company presentations at the campus and much more. The HEC alumni will also be available for help to the students for feedback and advice with regards to their future ventures. Several recruiting events such as MBA Career Week and the MBA Internship Day are also organized by the HEC Career Center.    

According to the HEC Employment Report of the past three years, 92% of the class was made up of international students representing some 50 odd countries and about 93% of the students were employed within three-months post their MBA graduation. While the average sign on package in 2015 of an HEC MBA graduate was $101,400, by 2017 it increased to $112,800. The Companies which visit the HEC campus include consulting firms such as McKinsey and Bain, technology firms like Google and Microsoft, and in the financial services sector companies such as American Express, Goldman Sachs, Amadeus, JP Morgan, and Barclays in addition to others were some of the top recruiters. 

Scholarships and Financial Aid 

Hec itself offers certain scholarships to it’s students, the application process for which will be revealed to the admitted candidates at a later date. These scholarships are highly competitive and in some cases even require an additional interview or an essay, or both. Apart from that, there are several external scholarships that the students can apply for to study at HEC. 

  • Colfuturo for Colombian candidates. 
  • EIFFEL for candidates working in emerging countries. Eligible for admitted candidates only. 
  • Fondation Rainbow Bridge for women of Asian or African countries that have suffered a natural disaster/drought/famine and require assistance. Eligible for admitted candidates only. Essay question  for the same – “Please explain in 1,500 words why you should be named the Fondation Rainbow Bridge Scholar at the HEC Paris MBA Program, while identifying your post-MBA goals.
  • Forté Foundation for female candidates who have proved themselves to be exceptional. Eligible for admitted candidates only. Selection will be done on the basis of the following essay question – “Please explain in 1,500 words why you should be the Forté Scholar at the HEC Paris MBA?”   
  • L’Oréal Scholarship for students who show exceptional professional achievements and show a potential for leadership. Eligible for admitted candidates only. An essay will have to be submitted discussing about the style of leadership that the student thinks will maximize creativity and innovation, in 1,500 words. 
  • Bellanger Scholarship for American nationals.
  • FUNDED Scholarship for Mexican candidates. 

Those students who are sponsored by their government or their companies will not be eligible for any of the scholarships offered at HEC.
