INTRODUCTION

Rice University, also known as William Marsh Rice University is basically an private research university which is located on a 300 acre campus in Houston, Texas, United States. The Rice University was established in the year 1912 after the murder of its namesake William Marsh Rice.

The university is divided into 11 residential colleges and 8 schools of academic study. The students at the Rice University are bound by the strict Honor Code, which is enforced by a student-run Honor Council.

As alumni, the university has more than two dozen Marshall Scholars and a dozen Rhodes Scholars. It also has provided the world with a disproportionate number of astronauts and space scientists. Two of its alumni have won the Nobel Prize and various others are leading researchers in science, technology, and engineering.

STUDENTS AND CULTURE

For most universities, the word college means an entire institution, to the undergraduate programs, or to a particular academic division. But at Rice University, it is a way of life.

The Rice University has in total 7, 022 students out of which there are 4, 001 undergraduate students and 3, 021 postgraduate students.

The male make up of 52 per cent of the undergraduate body and 64 per cent of the professional and post graduate student body. The Honor Code of Rice University plays an integral part in academic affairs.

ACADEMICS

Rice University is of medium size and is highly residential research university. Most of the enrolments are in the full time, 4 year undergraduate courses emphasizing arts & sciences and professions.

Each department of Rice is organised into 1 of 3 distribution groups, and students whose major lies within the scope of one group must take at least 3 courses of at least 3 credit hours each of approved distribution classes in each of the other 2 groups, and also completing one physical education course as part of the LPAP (Lifetime Physical Activity Program) requirement.

It has recently begun to offer minors in areas such as business, energy and water sustainability, and global health.

STUDEND AND CULTURE

The Rice University might be best suited for the ones who like the fast paced city life. The residential college system forms the heart of the campus. The colleges are divided into small communities where students live, dine and interact with faculty mentors. Each college has its own government, budget, intramural teams and faculty advisors. The students are put into one of the 11 colleges as freshmen and remain affiliated with that college throughout their time at Rice.

There are more than 200 student organisations where all the students are welcomed and encouraged to participate. These organisations include performance, media, athletic, academic, religious, cultural and political groups.

HOUSING AND DINING

Around 78 per cent of the undergraduate population of Rice University reside on campus. The housing on the campus of Rice University is divided into 11 residential colleges, which form an integral part of the student life at the university.

The 11 colleges of the university are Baker, Will Rice, Hanszen, Wiess, Jones, Brown, Lovett, Sid Richardson, Martel, McMurtry and Duncan College.

The housing services of the Rice University combine the undergraduate housing, the residential dining, graduate apartments and summer conference services.

The university takes care of the off campus housing for its postgraduate as well as professional students.

THE ADMISSION PROCESS

The university accepts either the Common Application or the Coalition Application along with one supplementary essay that is specific to your academic interest. They also need a $75 non-refundable application fee which you can pay using a credit card when you submit the application.
